Three years ago today, I posted my first blog entry and wondered “If I write it, will they come?” They did. At first in trickles, but three years later the Words on the Page blog is a thriving little community of commenters, online chums and offline friends who keep coming back for more. I’m honored, and I thank every one of you.
The first to arrive was Devon Ellington. She’s been posting with me the longest, and her support, both online and off, has helped me in ways too numerous to mention. Thank you, sister.
When I started this little experiment, I wanted to do exactly as my tag line up there at the top of this page suggests – give some advice and share some ramblings on this career of ours. We’ve covered everything from cover letters to marketing and back. Sometimes commiserating, often sharing laughs, you have helped this blog live and breathe and you’ve become part of something very near and dear to me.
So in honor of my third anniversary of blogging, I’m inviting you to post your thoughts: Where was your career three years ago? How has your career changed? What has surprised you most about freelancing? Are you in a better place/worse place/same place?
All who comment are eligible to win an Amazon gift e-card courtesy of yours truly. Winner will be selected randomly using a random number generator. All posts dated March 17th will be considered. I wanted it to be a Guinness in honor of this most auspicious holiday (in my book, anyway), but alas, not all are drinkers. But you can buy a book on Guinness – how’s that?
Happy Anniversary, darling! I’m thrilled to make the journey with you.
Three years ago, I was still running dual careers, although I’d started pulling back from Broadway. The serials were wrapping up, and I wasn’t sure what to do next. I read Peter Bowerman’s book and wondered, “Can I do this?” and the more I read, the more I thought, “Yeah, I can do this.”
Yes, you can do it. Yes you are doing it!
Three years ago I was struggling. Still freelancing most of the time, but still relying on temp agencies when things got tough. Things are SO much better now!
Wow, three years? Awesome, Lori! I haven’t had as much time lately to read all my favorite blogs, but yours is at the top of the list!!! 🙂
*hugs*
Michele
Lori, congrats on your third blogaversary! Three years ago I was still working full time in an office, and now I’m freelancing full time. I’ve definitely had my share of hits and misses, but I’m proud of what I’ve achieved.
Let’s see, 3 years ago…I was freelancing for many of the same clients I work for today, and that’s a good thing. I have relationships with these people; they trust me and I trust them, so I’m glad that hasn’t changed. What’s different is that I took the plunge, wrote 2 books, started a website, found great blogs like this one, where I virtually meet wonderful fellow writers who teach me things every day. My own blog will be starting up within the next month (I hope), and I’ll be curious to see where that takes me over the next year.
Congratulations on your success here, Lori. I’m thrilled I discovered this blog, and look forward to reading your daily entries.
Happy Anniversary!
Hmmmm… my career 3 years ago. Oh. Not good. The business was at its’ height and my best friend was dying of breast cancer. I essentially dropped everything to be by her side. The biz suffered but it was the right thing to do.
Happy anniversary! My blog has its anniversary next week – three years, also! A big three years.
Congratulations on three years, Lori. You’ve been at blogging a few months longer than I have.
Three years ago, I working with many of the same clients as I am now. However, I have expanded my services to include Web site creation, interior book design, and consulting on self-publishing in addition to writing and editing. I like doing a lot of things for a few clients rather than a few things for a lot of clients.
Here’s wishing you many more years of sharing your advice and ramblings.
Congratulations on your staying power, and for three years of good posting. Continued good wishes for the future!
How awesome! Congrats to you! Your blog has been a motivating force.:)
I’m so excited for you! Three years ago I saw my first online piece get published. I was so excited that it got me motivated to think I can really do this (so I really got started writing about the same time you started blogging) and people will really buy what I write. Now I’m finally learning what I want to write and who I want to work with.
I guess that means I’ve been reading your blog for almost those whole three years. At first I was just a lurker, drinking in everything you were telling me. It’s prepared me for some things and others I’ve just have to learn on my own but I’m so glad to not be a lurker anymore and be a part of your community! Happy Anniversary!
