How is your holiday? What are your plans for New Year’s Eve? We had a quiet, lovely day that started Christmas Eve with snow. Heavy, big flakes that coated the ground quickly came down for about an hour or two before it all turned to rain. We woke up to white on the ground, but it was gone by noon.
We headed to Washington Memorial Chapel for evening services (pictured here), which are great. The church was decked out beautifully, and the choir was in fine form. Then home to wait for Santa.
We had a nice breakfast of French toast, then a nice roast chicken like the one I’d cooked for his children the week before. This time, however, we were inundated with smoke and alarms going off. I found a covered roasting pan and that kept the grease from flaring up everywhere. Lousy recipe called for it to be cooked uncovered. Whose dumb idea is that? This bird involved less drama, but didn’t quite taste as moist. There’s something to be said for smoking up the house for two hours, I guess.
Yesterday we meambled over to the mall where I scored major savings at Banana Republic. It’s not somewhere I shop normally, but their sale prices were suddenly better than those at Macy’s. In fact, I bought probably the only two shirts at Macy’s that weren’t on sale. Figures. They cost more than the four things I bought at BR.
Today we went out for coffee, then spent a few hours driving through the country just outside of town. If we could, we’d live there. We’re both more country people than suburban people. In a short while I’m meeting a friend for lunch, then I think I’m going out to get my Windows Surface. I’ve put it off too long and I’m in love with the idea of it. Time to buy me a present!
So how are your holidays? I hope you’re kicking back and enjoying time off. I’ve nothing to work on, so I’m happily buried in something other than writing. And as expected, the minute my brain gets a chance to rest, it starts filling with ideas and poems and plot points. Nothing is better for creativity than a break from the stress.
How are you? What’s happening for you this week?
I'm glad you had a great Christmas, Lori. I did, too. Spent Christmas Eve and Christmas day with my brother's family and their sweet and not-so-little 4-month old puppy. The rest of the extended family joined us on Christmas day. Loads of fun, tons of great food, lots of surprises (they even got me – big time!).
My 8-year old niece beat me at Words with Friends. She's smart. She added e/d/s to all the big words. My 9-year old nephew was one or two points shy of her. He added "b" in front of my "limp." They gloated all day because they beat Auntie Paula. Love it!
This is the one week each year I try to take off, but I might send an LOI or two so I don't feel like a total slacker.
Sounds like everyone had a nice Christmas. Me, too. 🙂 My sister, her husband, son & adorable white miniature schnauzer, Kali, arrived for Christmas Eve & Christmas Day.
My nephew shared photos from his summer spent in Japan. Fascinating – not what I pictured.
We had a late white Christmas and the day after I woke up with a cold. 🙁 I usually only get one per year and I almost made it through 2012 without one.
So, what do I decide to do? Change my theme on my business blog. Of course, I now have wonky things to work out. I figured better now when I'm not busy than later on.
Somehow, I stupidly scheduled my annual physical three days after the beginning of the New Year. How dumb was that? Then a few days later I have my appointment for my refraction on my damaged cornea. Fingers crossed.
Have a fabulous rest of the holiday and enjoy the calm (?). 🙂
Did all the family stuff on Christmas Eve and a couple of days before… ate myself into a stupor.
Lots of pointless reading, some gentle goal setting… it's a good time of year.
It's nice and quiet. I worked on my Goals, Dreams, and Resolutions for the year, read a lot, and am writing a short story for each day of the Twelve Days of Christmas.
Also got a wacky idea for a proposal for my agent, so I'm working on that.
I LOVE Banana Republic when they have sales! Everything I've bought there has been really good quality, and I like a lot of the simplicity n the designs. Enjoy!
I wish it were snowing here in Berlin, but we had an incredibly mild day here today. It's Springtime – at least for now. Have a Happy New Year!
Paula, it sounds like a very lovely day. And it's nice to hear that the younger generation is kicking ass in Words! 🙂 Means they're learning how to spell, amen!
Sorry about your cold, Cathy. 🙁 I like your changes on the blog. Brave of you!
Anne, it's the "gentle" that I like best. Gentle is the perfect word for this past week.
Devon, love seeing your GDR updated. I'll have to visit today while I still have spare time. And BR's sales are fantastic, though I will say their post-holiday sale at the outlets were abyssmal. Better to go to the mall instead.
EP, I've often wanted to go to Berlin. I've heard it's quite lovely. Lucky you! And happy 2013 to you as well, friend.
