The Year of Living Dangerously

Posted on September 13, 2016 by lwidmer

What’s on the iPod: Don’t Wanna Lose Your Love by Carlos Santana w/Los Lonely Boys I’m about to admit something to you that I’ve hidden for close to a year — I haven’t marketed at all this year.  Maybe that’s a bit of an overstatement. Yes, definitely an overstatement. Let me rephrase: I haven’t had…

4 Great Ways to Expand Your Freelance Business

Today we should be near Fort William or Glencoe. There’s a chance we’ll be back on the Isle of Skye, one of my favorite places. Doesn’t matter — the point is I probably won’t be around today. When I return this weekend, I’ll be thrust right back into work and right back into building up…

Planning Ahead: What to Do When Clients Disappear

Posted on August 3, 2016July 20, 2016 by lwidmer

I’m not around this week or next, but I’ve planned ahead. Apropos given the title of this new series, isn’t it? Please keep commenting. I may not be on the same continent, but I’m going to grab the WiFi where I can. I was going over my pre-trip plans the other week, trying to connect…

What I’m reading: The Tin Drum by Günter Grass What I’m listening to: Mr. Hurricane by Beast The week started out good so far. Yesterday I started — and finished — one article assignment and got to work on revisions for another article. The latter is a piece with an editor I’ve not worked with before,…

What I’m reading: The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins What I’m listening to: The Loneliness and The Scream by Frightened Rabbit It’s been a busy week. Freelance Writing in 2016: How to Make Your Money

Posted on January 28, 2016June 30, 2016 by lwidmer

Ahhhhh…. that’s the sound of a busy writer finally taking a holiday. Today, I was outside and walking and taking in sights while on vacay. Tomorrow, more of the same. I was talking with my daughter recently (a moment ago, actually) and I asked her “If you were a freelance writer, what question would you…

Tough Times and the Freelancer

What’s on the iPod: The Way It Goes by Dispatch A rough week so far. We had a wonderful surprise party for my mom’s 80th. She was truly surprised despite my having everyone show up randomly. Facebook was the excuse — I’d told her I’d broadcast that I’d be home, so a few people might…

Many of my clients are found through LinkedIn (typically reconnecting with someone from my 30 + years of corporate work or a referral). Others are through industry connections. Despite the advice of a self-professed "guru," I tend to not market (or very little) in my own city as this area is famous for low wages.

Cathy, when you told me that "advice" I was floored. Who in their right mind gives out advice like that? Sure, if it's an area where there's plenty of work and clients willing to pay your rate, go for it. But if not, you've just limited yourself to bargain-basement rates determined by someone who doesn't value you.

I live in a large metro area. Maybe one of my clients lives here? It's a contact from my magazine days and we've yet to commit it to contract, but geez. Imagine if I'd stuck with just this area? I'd be washing dishes at the local diner. LOL

Ha! If I stuck to that "guru's" advice I'd be earning 20-cents/word from the regional glossy or less than 10-cents/word from the daily newspaper. Babysitters earn more.

One more place to look: custom content companies. They free magazine from Realtors may well be a custom content publication. So are the magazines you get at a major grocery store if you spend at least $50. I found one client after a store I used to shop at started offering those magazines. I read one and said, "I can write this!" Once I tracked down the company I realized they produce dozens of custom publications in several industries. They might publish magazines, newsletters, web copy, catalogs, all kinds of things. I can't say I write regularly for them, but I've done maybe six of seven things over the last two years. All fun and simple projects (read: no interviews required), and the pay is decent.

I love 'under well defined rocks!' Ain't that the truth… stumbling over clients is often just a matter of paying attention.

Paula, thank you. That's what I meant by the "giveaway" magazines.

Anne, it's my favorite place to find clients. 🙂
