Writers Worth: Snipe Hunting and Other Scary Freelance Things

Posted on by lwidmer

Mary Schneider has already overcome a lot of fear. She reached out on this blog, on social media, and made friends. She pushed down the fear of rejection and built connections and friendships. She opted to work hard at her freelancing instead of waiting for success to come to her. And she’s pushed past a…

Writers Worth: Fear of Freelance Writing

Let me tell you about Joy Drohan. A number of years back, Joy reached out and thanked me for my part in a joint webinar Jake Poinier and I had held that Joy had attended. We got to talking (with me, we always get to talking). She’s now my accountability partner, and — I’m admitting…

Writers Worth: That Other F Word

Cathy Miller is my phone buddy. It’s not unusual for the phone to ring and for Cathy to be on the other end. We’d spent many years in what I call a Writer Gang — Jenn Mattern, Yo Prinzel, Cathy, and me. It transitioned easily to phone calls. And boy, do we talk! Typically we…

Jake Poinier on Facing Freelance Fears

Posted on by lwidmer

I consider myself lucky — I’ve met Jake Poinier and have shared caffeine with him. We were in Arizona for family reasons, and I remembered Jake was in the area. I sent an email. Before too long, we were sitting outside a Starbucks on a gorgeous day in April, talking as though we’d known each…

Nancy Oliver is just one of those people. We got to know each other over LinkedIn, and hellos turned quickly into wicked, laughter-inducing conversation. She’s a Southern-bred lady, which basically means all bets are off.  Or as she puts it: “I am Southern — I am always slightly a-flutter.” Our recent conversation involved a new…

Writers Worth: Keeping Fear at Bay

Mika Doyle is a breath of fresh air. She’s one of those writers who brings a sincerity to everything she touches. Example: when I asked her to write a post, she was in mourning. She’d lost a beloved professor, and it had hit her particularly hard as she hadn’t been in touch with him in…

Writers Worth: Using Yes to Combat Fear

Posted on by lwidmer

Let me tell you how many ways I love Anne Wayman. She was one of the first freelance writers I knew who was actually helping other writers. Sure, I’d met plenty of friendly, helpful people on newsgroups (remember those?), but no one was running a website for the express purpose of helping other writers. At…

This is great–not surprising coming from Anne! I’m also a huge supporter of the yes philosophy. (IIRC, when I blogged about it, there were twice as many search results about saying “no.”)

I, too, met Anne via About.com and have kept up with her ever since. She’s helped me when I’m down more times than I can count. And yes, it’s so important to say yes when your intuition tells you it’s the right thing.

Anne never ceases to amaze me. This time by sharing that she was afraid not of writing, but of how others might react to the idea of her writing.

Like countless other writers, Anne, I’m so glad you didn’t let that fear stop you from following your dreams. So many of us count on your sage advice, which usually comes in the form of questions designed to get us to view things from a fresh perspective and discover our own answers.

Lol, I forget in away that Lori and I have yet to meet f2f. I’ve always felt bonded to her in some way. Small wonder… look at the nice nice super nice things she’s saying about me! I’m loving it.

Just reread the article I wrote, and yes, I made a typo – enveloped should be envelopes – sigh. Fourth ‘graph below ‘My First Big ‘Yes’ if you’re curious.

Regardless I’m really tickled I wrote it… for it rings even truer today than it did when I wrote it for Writer’s Worth Month. What a wonderful celebration and learning Lori has created for us all. Lori is also a true giver.

Thanks, kiddo… warm, long, luxurious virtual hug….

Sorry, I’m a bit late to the game. Picked up our puppy yesterday. 🙂 Anne’s blog was also one of the first freelance help sites I found when I started my freelance career almost 10 years ago (where does the time go)? The funny thing is we were both living in San Diego at the time, but Anne and I did not meet until after I moved from San Diego and came back for the 3-Day, 60-Mile Walk each year. Lunch with Anne is one of my favorite 3-Day traditions!

I’ve always loved Anne’s calm, positive approach to writing and life. Her handling of the fear all writers have is classic Anne. 🙂

Hey, ya’all – we should tell each other how much we love/respect each other more often… sure feels good and I feel the same way about each of you.

“Anne is also one of my dearest friends. And I’ve never met her. That’s who she is — she loves you even from a distance. She becomes that integral part of your life without you even realizing it. And then one day, you realize it. And you’re pretty damned glad she’s in your orbit — or rather that you’re in hers. Anne, you see, is what I call a catnip person. Good luck not being drawn to her energy.”

Could not have said it better.
