Rest for the Weary

Posted on March 8, 2012 by lwidmer

Please head over to Michelle Rafter’s blog, WordCount, to see my guest post. Thank you, Michelle!

Sometimes the universe provides what you need when you need it. I’ve felt awful for the last few weeks. This has coincided with a time in my workload where the deadlines were longer and the projects had all been completed. I marketed, but I didn’t go nuts with it because of how I felt/feel.

It’s taken me two weeks to get this little article written. I don’t do things halfway, so slapping it together doesn’t happen. It’s finished, I think, and the quotes are being reviewed by those who requested such. I have to go over it this morning before my energy fades completely to make sure I’ve included all I needed to.

I’ve had a number of inquiries for other projects, one of which I took because it’s small and it’s the friend of a friend. I will give her my all, and if I’m too ill to make sense of it, I’ll tell her that, too. But right now, I have energy in the mornings, so I’m making the most of it before noon. If I can’t, I know a few folks who can take care of her.

But this afternoon is all mine. There’s a bed with my name on it, and a pillow that has lots of sleep left in it. That’s where you’ll find me. Better yet, don’t try. I’ll be back soon enough.

When you’re sick, how do you get time off? What’s your back-up plan?

There have been terrible timeswhen I've had to work through the beginning of an illness. However, I've also asked the client if I can pass work to colleagues in the writing business when I had ongoing deadlines and I was unable to work for a short period. That way I get my rest and the client's project stays on schedule.

Thankfully, it's been a long time since I've had any illness that was bad enough to keep me from work for more than a day at a time. I'm not really sure what I'd do – push through the best I can, I suppose. It might depend on where I am in the assignment.

Here are your orders, Lori: Rest, (more) tea, then a little more rest. Don't even TRY to write a new blog post until you're feeling better or we'll suspend your computer privileges until you're totally recovered. We can make due with archives for a couple days.

    Get well soon!

There is nothing more important than your health. I know it is a duh statement, but I believe too many of us put it on the back burner. Lori, take care of yourself! Seriously, the work and this blog will still be there. I know it is difficult when you're a professional like yourself. It sounds like your illness is not run of the mill and you better nip it in the butt. Take some time, have your family cater to your every need 🙂 and we'll see you on the other side.

Hope you feel better soon. I've been sick, too, and wrote on my blog about how much less stressful it was to deal with as a freelancer than an employee. http://www.freelanceqanda.com/?p=241

Damaria, I'm in the middle of that kind of situation exactly. YOu're an inspiration. I'll keep chugging along. 🙂

Jeez, Paula – it's been a while since I've gotten marching orders. Yes, ma'am! 🙂

Oh Wade, if only I could let them cater. The daughter is sick and may end up in the hospital today. That flu hit her hard. But hubs is pampering and worrying, so that's nice. 🙂

Oh Betty, I'm sorry you're sick, too! Hope you're feeling better soon.

Thank you, Tony. Hope you're well. Long time no talk, friend.

Okay, Lori, what does your body have to do to get your attention? It's been screaming at you for a while.

Take two Paulas and a dash of Wade and get better soon. 🙂

    Feel better soon.

When I worked in production, it was my job not to get sick. Period. That was part of the gig. If you were REALLY sick, you took off, otherwise, it was expected to push through, especially if you were the swing. If they call you because someone else is sick and you're sick — they don't call again.

Now that I am in control of my own schedule, if I'm on top of my assignments and I feel something coming on, I try to take a day early on to stop it. If I"m behind, I have to get the work done. I do the work on time, and THEN I take time — but often, it means I need to take more. So I try to catch it early, use my herbal room remedies to fight it, and then I'm down for the count for a shorter length of time.

The longer you push, the longer recovery you need, in my experience.

    Feel better soon!

I took two Paulas and a Wade and hey, I'm feeling better. Thanks, Dr. Cathy! 🙂

Thanks, Anne. She appears to be on the mend, as well.

Great advice, Devon. Only trouble was this was something I'd tried to push through with when I should have seen a doctor right away –intestinal infection. Not virus, but infection. Nasty stuff.

But in general, your advice is spot on. Rest while you can and keep the body in good condition.

Getting sick when you have projects that need completing is the worst! Difficulty concentrating and low energy. Get plenty of rest and hopefully you'll be feeling like yourself again very soon.
