Things That Make Me Smile

Posted on by

What I’m reading upstairs: Shopgirl by Steve Martin
What’s on the iPod: Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People

Busy day doing nothing billable – yet. Worked out details with a partner on an upcoming project. Also put together a mailing list for an upcoming conference I’m attending. I’m trying to drum up business before the conference, client meetings at the conference, and business after the conference.

Because I’ve given up bitching and moaning for Lent (so far I’m still alive), I’ve decided instead of my Things That Make My Head Explode post, I’d switch it up with something more warm and fuzzy. Not too warm and fuzzy – we don’t want to go overboard.

U2 Rattle and Hum: I could watch this movie a million times and still love it. There’s something about watching a group of guys who love what they do in action. I’m in love with their lyrics and their personalities.

Once: A gorgeous movie with great music. Glen Hansard can be my broken-hearted-hoover-fixer-sucker-guy any day.

Ghost Hunters: Just stand aside and let me watch people hunting for things that go bump in the night, okay? Unless you’ve experienced something, you probably won’t get this addiction.

Eddie Izzard He is by far the most quotable comedian ever. Just try taking a European vacation without at least a dozen Eddie quotes popping into your head.

Really bad jokes: My favorite –
How do you catch a unique rabbit?
Unique up on him.
How do you catch a tame rabbit?
Tame way, unique up on him.

Companies that get it: Thanks to Dan over at Newton Ideas for bringing the good news in my in box. A company that avoids paying like a content farm? I’m giddy.

What makes you smile?

    What makes me smile?

    Writing
    My friends & family
    Book stores

    Great music

Amen to all of that. 🙂

Book stores – I'd work for free in those just to keep them alive.

I share a lot of Devon's, except I'll throw in dogs instead of cats (not that I hate cats-just love dogs) and I'd replace Yoga with walking. The rest are the same with a few extra –

    A baby's laugh
    A new client
This community and the one at Creative Copy Challenge

Strangers smiling hello to me first.

My dopey dog, Sir Chudleigh Wellington Twickford III

    BOOKSTORES!

    Reading a great book

The feel I get being in the pool each morning.

An atta girl from a client

Finding a coin on the ground

What a wonderful comment prompt for a Friday morning. Especially given the horrific events in Japan, not a bad time to pause & reflect on life's small joys.

Here are a few off the top of my still somewhat sleepy head:

    * Listening to my dog snore
    * Bookstores & libraries
    * Watching cats sleep in a pile
    * The music of Brian Wilson
    * Reading a perfectly written sentence
    * Writing a perfectly written sentence
    * Walking into a room & seeing my wife

And on the "so bad it's good (to me at least" joke front …

    Knock, Knock!
    Who's there?
    Interrupting cow!
    Interrup —
    MOO! MOO! MOO!

I'll be here all week, folks. Try the meatloaf & don't forget to tip your bartenders & wait staff.

And, of course, a grand weekend to you all!

So a guy walks into the doctor, visibly agitated, and excitedly says, "Doctor! Doctor! I'm a wigwam! I'm a teepee!"

The doctor responds, "Calm down, son — you're two tents!"

With that….a happy Friday to all. I'll be out of internet range early next week, but will look forward to checking in Wed/Thu. We'll be sailing to Catalina, which makes me verrrry happy.

I'm smiling today because March 11 is the 11th anniversary of the day my dog adopted me. (I had no intention of getting a puppy until she curled up in my arms and fell asleep. Such a con artist – turns out she hates snuggling. Yet she still makes me smile.) Lucky 11-11.

Other things making me smile today: Spring has nearly sprung; the irksome article is done; I just ate some chocolate; I have a light workload today. I'll be happier once I hear back from my friend in Japan that she and her family are okay (they're in Tokyo, which bodes well).

I also love U2, Lori, but I've never seen Rattle and Hum. I interviewed Grant and Jason from Ghosthunters a few years ago, and when asked the scariest thing he'd encountered, Jason said it was one of his plumbing clients.

Oh, and after reading the comments above, I'm also happy that I can't tell a joke to save my life. That means no one expects me to remember jokes.

Eddie Izzard is a genius. I was lucky to see him a few times. I actually had to take a nap during "Circle" because I was laughing so hard, my brain nearly shut down. I still haven't lived that down.

Favorite Eddie quotes – how can you pick? "You're a plumber? What on EARTH is that?"

Have a lovely weekend and keep smiling everyone.

You're part of what makes me smile here every day, Cathy. 🙂

Gabriella, only a writer would find such a COOL name for a dog! 🙂 I get it. I named my parents' cat Pusslington Q. Paddington III.

Hugh, thanks for the laugh! And I'm the same – when He comes home, you can't wipe the smile from my face.

Jake, I laughed so loudly they all came asking what was so funny. 🙂

Prayers to your friend in Tokyo, Paula.

Michelle, that's one of the funniest scenes! That and "I claim this country for England."

And the Indian people say "You can't claim it – we live here!"

"Do you have a flag? No flag, no country! Can't have one!"

Saw him in Manhattan. Worth the late-night drive home!

Okay, I'll play, just as soon as I stop laughing!

    my grandkids
    my kids
MzTiz the tabby who lives with me
The canyon I look at and the birds there
My readers, my guest posters, good coffee, rainbows… oh dear, I'm about to get really sappy… will go back to laughing instead.

    Have a great weekend all.

Glad you appreciate Sir Chudleigh's name, Lori! My neighbor actually said to me, "You're not really going to name him that, are you?" Yes, it's fun!

But of course a woman who names a cat Pusslington Q. Paddington III appreciates the humor of it! Bravo!

This blog post made me smile today, too.

I like green grass. Too bad I haven't seen it for awhile now.

Depends on the day. Today, it was a half-hour foot reflexology session followed by a half-hour acupressure treatment. I've never been so happy to be slapped around by a tiny Asian woman.

    Eddie's hilarious!

The show Lost makes me smile.

    Writing makes me smile.

So does cooking, and talking to my younger sisters on the phone.

But most of all, my daughter makes me smile. She's adorably adorable. =)

    Delena

Wendy, I can send you a photo of some green grass, if you like. 🙂

Amie, you had me laughing out loud! I wouldn't mind paying to be slapped around like that, either!

Same with me, Delena. My children make me smile, as does my husband, as do my parents and sibs.

    And Lost? LOVE.

What's making me smile now is a joke I heard this weekend: A woman walked into a bar and asked the bartender for a double entendre…so he gave it to her.
