Short Weekends, Long Lists

What’s on the iPod: Free Fallin’ by Tom Petty

I wait for the weekends, extend them by a day when I can, and still they fly by. We had a meditation monk here for two days, which was great. But it meant we had to arrange a meditation group, which can be a lot like herding cats with busy people and busy lives. Still, we pulled it off and it was a great evening.

Yesterday I cleaned up part of the garden before the temps went too high. I had company – the neighbor’s cat came visiting, complete with his “Melt the humans with cuteness” look. I’ve taken to calling him Carl. He looks like a Carl. He’s like Fabio – he’ll always get by on his looks.

The afternoon was spent chasing down a bridal shower that I never did find. I broke the rule – I didn’t respond in time. But since this is a friend and former neighbor and our kids are like extended family, I wanted to be there. So I drove to where Mapquest said it was. Nope. Nothing there. After about 20 minutes of looking, he was able to give me enough directions off the location website to get me there. But…. no shower. Cancelled. Turns out they moved the shower. I found out an hour into it, when I was home, exhausted, frustrated, and sunburned (the roof was down on the car). If I’d called and responded like I was supposed to, I’d have known about it. I didn’t. My fault.

I watched Spain win over The Netherlands, then we “celebrated” the end of the World Cup (or they celebrated Spain’s win and I celebrated the end of those HORNS) at our Irish pub. The evening was spent without television – instead, I devoured The Devil in the White City, which is turning into a fantastic tale.

Today is a list as long as my arm. Work projects all over the place, and someone needs to go to the airport at noon. One project revisions are finalizing just in time for me to write the next one. New projects came in last week, so my Monday is starting (and ending) early.

How was your weekend?

Holly hated those "horns" and refused to be in the same room as them. They gave me headaches on occasions too. We have it all again in 2 years … if England qualify for Europe. I really hope the horns stay in S Africa.

I think the entire world beyond South Africa shares that sentiment, Diane. We watched matches with the sound off (or we had the DVR going and watched in fast-forward). It's too much. I can't imagine trying to play in that noise.

When I organize something like the session you mentioned, I no longer accommodate people's schedules. I say, "X is here and we're doing the session on this day at this time."

If it means enough to them, they will MAKE the time. Otherwise, we can do without them.

Weekend was okay — i was getting over something.

Can't wait to see you next week!

    Hi Lori.

Weekend was fun. Adopted a new dog! Drove 3.5 hours there and back on Saturday to pick him up, and have spent the rest of the weekend getting him comfortable in his new digs. He's a sweetie!

And in honor of his English Springer heritage, I've chosen an appropriately stuffy English name (taken from the names of English Villages): Chudleigh Wellington Twickford (the first)!

So all in all, a good weekend, but, like you, it's back to work. I, too, have a busy week. Thank goodness for lotsa work, no?

Devon, same here. If you wait for everyone to be able to make it, it never happens. I found that out with our writers' group – we didn't meet for months because we were too busy trying to please everyone. We just plow on through now. It is when it is. (Can't wait to see you, too!)

It must be the weekend for it, Gabriella. My girlfriend just said she adopted a pup, too! Congrats, Mom. 🙂

Carrie, so far, it really is.

Chudleigh! What a perfect dog name.

My weekend was fine. I played hooky for part of Friday afternoon because a friend was dividing some hostas and had some divisions for me. (I'll give her one of my August Moon hostas in return.) I thought she meant a few divisions. She gave me three things jammed with divisions – she estimated about 50 divisions in the two largest containers and maybe 30 in the smaller one. You do the math. She wanted to give me more, but I had no clue what I'd do with them all.

Saturday was supposed to be 90-ish, and I wanted to get some hostas planted before the real heat set in. I planted about a dozen before some storms clouds approached. I should have kept working – storm blew by without a drop of rain and the temps dropped to a cool breezy 80. I think I've now found (four or five) new homes for the remaining hostas.

I was also glad Saturday morning to see that one of my LA-based editors sent me an assignment late Friday. Knocked a blog post and a quick column out this weekend and had the sheer pleasure of watching a preview copy of the Mad Men season premiere. (Sometimes my job has its perks.)

It was a busy weekend for me, doing lots of interviews for a story I'm working on. But I like that feeling of being productive! And the weekend actually seemed long for me… hubby and I got up early on Saturday to do a church project, and took a nap when we came home. So Saturday felt like Sunday, and so I had an "extra" weekend day on Sunday! Love that 🙂

I'm (mostly) with Devon re planning events… and I had a quiet, tv-free weekend. And I still knew who won the world cup (:

Say hello to Carl for me.
