Posted on January 29, 2020January 28, 2020 by lwidmer

I was talking with a writer friend a few days ago. She was relating an interaction with a potential client when it dawned on me: This writer has a superpower. Moreover, her superpower is so stealth, it’s taken me numerous conversations before I realized she had it. This is a writer who has an impressive…

How to Look Like a Dweeb to Potential Freelance Writing Clients

Posted on July 23, 2019July 24, 2019 by lwidmer

There’s plenty of freelance writing advice out there to help you get clients. But not a lot of it is telling you what not to do. I cruise around social media a lot. That’s where many of the worst offenses occur because, for some reason, people do not realize that everyone and his Uncle Fester…

8 Ways to Make Money Freelance Writing Right Now

Posted on June 5, 2019June 4, 2019 by lwidmer

Whoa. Summer is slow. I know that officially, it’s still spring. But companies and clients often use Memorial Day as their official “here come all the vacations” mentality. You would think summer would be a great time for freelancers to pick up extra projects. You sure would. Alas, while I’ve had a few summers that were so…

Reality Check: Are You Freelance Writing Material?

Posted on April 25, 2019April 25, 2019 by lwidmer

Yesterday, my workday looked like this: I revised a client article most of the morning. Due date — as soon as possible. Simultaneously, I was dealing with phone calls and texts from family members about our summer place. There’d been flooding. Apparently, I’m the designated calm voice in a sea (pun not intended) of anxiety…

The Pitch-Every-Day Freelance Writing Business Boost

Posted on February 26, 2019February 25, 2019 by lwidmer

Boost? Did I hear the word “boost”? Okay, so the word “boost” is becoming almost as hackneyed as the word “slams” in headlines. But there’s only so much space up there in the title bar. Forgive me. I was browsing Twitter and the blogs, as I’m known to do, and I noticed the usual advice…

4 Marketing Mistakes Freelancers Make

Posted on January 11, 2019January 10, 2019 by lwidmer

I was reading through a few blog post articles yesterday when I came across great marketing advice. It was sensible, and it was advice I’d given here a number of times. Yet I wasn’t buying it from this particular blogger. That’s because I’d been the target of one of this blogger’s marketing campaigns. And I…

What I’m listening to: You Can’t Save ‘Em All by Big Harp Funny how your career tells you what you should be doing. At a recent Meetup function, I was asked what kind of writing I do. “Risk management and insurance writing” I replied. It wasn’t until a few days later that I realized only…

You always have great advice, Lori! Those moments when we describe what we do and give a little elevator pitch can be an interesting opportunity for self-reflection. As in… what do I do again?! It’s a good question to ponder. Thanks for sharing.

LOL I know exactly what you mean, Sarah. Sometimes, it’s the deer-in-headlights response that we’re trying to avoid, isn’t it? 🙂

Interesting timing, Lori. After a guest coaching call with Anne Wayman, I have two new areas I want to explore more in the coming year. One was already becoming more apparent to me (I even wrote a blog post about it on my website). The other will be more of a creative challenge that, if properly done, could pay off a bit in the long term.

The first step is making myself set aside time for each of those things. Not sure if I’ll set one day aside for them or an hour per day…but I need to separate those efforts from my ongoing assignments so they don’t get lost in the shuffle.

Without realizing it, I’d already begun adding social media connections for the first area before Anne and I even spoke!

Going to read your blog post right now…
