Can You Hear Me Now?

Posted on March 13, 2008 by lwidmer

Networking. Quick – what just came to mind when you read that word? Standing with a cocktail in one hand and a business card in the other? Calling people indiscriminately and trying to convince them you’re the writer for them? Pushing to get the job even if it means pushing too far? Time to rethink…

When Your Rep is at Stake

Posted on March 12, 2008 by lwidmer

Your mother always told you to be wary of strangers. Her advice doesn’t sound so overprotective now, does it? Understand this – in each and every dealing you have with people, whether friendly dealings or business dealings, your reputation is on the line. When Bob Younce commented on yesterday’s post about how he makes sure…

Heinous, Man

Posted on March 11, 2008 by lwidmer

Kristen King over at Inkthinker has a great post up today on the 7 Heinous Practices You Should Stop Immediately. I love her writing style, but the real gems in this post are the tips. Kristen’s hit every one, too. A few that stuck out in particular were numbers 6 and 7 about reciprocal work…

You Don’t Know SWOT

Posted on March 6, 2008 by lwidmer

After getting some less-than-positive feedback on a project recently, I couldn’t help but notice a recurring theme in my criticisms over the years. I wanted to not notice, because who wants to dwell on weaknesses? Frankly, you do. And you should. In marketing terms, it’s known as SWOT – strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. It’s…

Guilty Pleasure

Posted on March 5, 2008 by lwidmer

I had my day off. It was marvelous! I sat with a girlfriend gabbing over life at Starbucks (living the ultimate stereotype), and I spent the rest of the morning in the mall just browsing. I bought a new apron (heavy-duty cook here), and I bought some marvelous teas at Teavana. Then I was home….

Faking It

Posted on March 4, 2008 by lwidmer

She claimed to be a white woman raised in poverty by a black foster mother. She watched her foster brother die after being shot by gang members. The woman, Barbara Jones (pseudonym for Margaret Seltzer), also claimed to be selling drugs for an LA gang. It’s a totally bizarre tale set forth in her memoir,…

Lori’s Big Day Off

Posted on February 29, 2008 by lwidmer

or What I’m Doing with My Leap Day Maybe it’s not professional to admit to it, but I’m taking a day off. I’m not showing up for work at this keyboard on Monday – not at all. Commas will have to remain misplaced. Fragments will remain, er, fragmented. And let’s not talk about what those…

A New Habit?

Posted on February 28, 2008 by lwidmer

For some reason, I’ve been receiving a lot more requests from people wanting me to promote their sites or their work. Normally, if I don’t know the person, I don’t bother. But this one intrigued me. The site is called Bookhabit, and I went there with more than a smidgen of skepticism. Let’s face it…

60%? If you use Payloadz, the fee is much lower. I’ll take a look at it, but 60%?

I’ve had – admittedly – a quick look at both. bookhabit vs payloadz – it’s an easy choice as to where I’d want to put my work. I’m picking if bookhabit takes off you’d make a lot more money on a site for writers and as long as they get readers there it should work. The $5000 competition they are running might mean they get a lot of people looking and it just may be worth entering. How many readers would payloadz get? The bookhabit model looks good. I’m going to watch bookhabit with interest.

    Hi,
    I’m Clare from Bookhabit.com
and I’d just like to clarify that we are not aiming to make huge profits at the expense of authors.

Paypal takes approx 20% per transaction as we are New Zealand based, and Bookhabit gets the remaining approx 40% to cover marketing, site development and maintenance, taxes etc.
    Regards, Clare

    Hi Clare,

I’m glad you stopped by. Your site didn’t read as though you were trying to make profits. My skepticism was entrenched in me long ago.

Is there any other payment processing structure you could use besides PayPal? It seems to me that 20% is just nuts, in my opinion.

Thanks everyone, for putting forth your opinions on this one. Like I said, I have no opinion either way. I was intrigued with the thought…
