Monthly Assessment: March 2024

Posted on March 29, 2024March 10, 2026 by lwidmer

For those of you who have followed this blog for a while, you may remember the Monthly Assessment series. When I redesigned in 2019, I had all intentions of restarting the assessment series. So many of you were happy for the monthly reminder to self-evaluate and attach some accountability to your freelance business. Then 2020…

Monthly Assessment: The Return of Freelance Accountability

Posted on October 1, 2019October 1, 2019 by lwidmer

Not so long ago, I posted my earnings, marketing, and such every month. I stopped when I redesigned the site because I wanted to lump them under a new area of the blog and, hopefully, get you to participate. That was the plan. Funny thing about plans that involve technology and yours truly. I’ve put it…

What I’m reading: The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins What I’m listening to: Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen It’s been one busy week. It’s not that there are a lot of projects, but that the projects I have are all due at the same time. I had wanted to go visit my dad…

What I’m listening to: Lola by The Kinks Friday already? I feel like I was busy, but not much got accomplished. I did get an interview in yesterday and got a good bit of one article completed. But then I thought I’d try that Five-minute WordPress Install. Two hours later, I gave up before I…

What I’m listening to: Interstate Love Song by Stone Temple Pilots After a month of nonstop work, it’s a bit hard to come to an abrupt halt. I finished every project in the queue and had time to breathe. I’m sure it won’t last long — I have revisions due back next week and two…

Monthly Assessment: February 2016

What I’m listening to: Downtown by Macklemore It’s amazing what a little organization can do for the productivity. I sat down yesterday around 8 am and by noon, I’d finished (and invoiced) three projects. The fourth was finished by 3 pm, and I finalized a new client contract, plus another contract from an existing client….

What I’m listening to: Starman by David Bowie For someone who was away for two weeks, I jumped right back into work with little effort. Since I’m still on UK/Netherlands time, I was up early and got busy. By noon on Monday, I’d finished a draft and a revision, then on to a call in…

Monthly Assessment: December 2015

What I’m listening to: The Sound of Silence by Disturbed Happy 2016! I hope your holiday season was nice and that the start of this year is a good one for you. In true fashion around our house, we started 2016 deep in a new project. Two years ago, we hauled decorations down before the…

Monthly Assessment: November 2015

What’s on the iPod: Asimbonanga sung by Woolies and Soweto Gospel Choir Hard to believe it’s been two years since the world lost Nelson Mandela (tomorrow is the anniversary of his passing). It’s funny how the brain works — I started humming this song about a week before I realized the anniversary of Mandela’s death…

Monthly Assessment: October 2015

What’s on the iPod: Just As Well by Jackie Green Welcome to November — another month, another reset of the earnings goals (for me, anyway). October was a crazy month. I had an unusual start to it, too. My husband had just confirmed reservations for a long weekend in Cape May. You know the drill…

Sounds like a great month, Lori. I did ok in October, but I had a week off at the end, so I've come back to a busy November. However, over the whole year, I've passed my earnings target, which is good news for Christmas shopping! 🙂

And brag you should, Lori. Congrats!

I hit target in October. I started a marketing plan of contacting a minimum of 3 LI contacts a week. That has led to interesting discussions. Nothing in actual projects – yet – but hope springs eternal.

November is always bad for me as I'm gone for 1/2 of it for the 3-Day Walk and vacation time. And existing clients have been missing their target deadlines for submitting required info. So, the last two weeks have been an exercise in frustration.

I have a blog redesign planned for next year and imagine that will take up much of the rest of the year. Thank goodness for existing clients as I have projects lined up into the New Year.

That is good news, Sharon! Do you do like I do and start planning for the holiday expenses in August?

Cathy, congratulations! Isn't it great to hit that target? And I love your idea of three LI contacts/week. Much more organized way to go about it!

Good luck on the redesign — doing something similar myself right now.

I tried leaving a comment before, but can't remember what I wrote other than: It was a very busy month for me, too. Two new clients, several existing clients with multiple projects. Actual cash-in-hand earnings were slightly over my modest monthly goal, but the total of the work I turned in this month was more than double that monthly goal.

Good news from Favorite Editor, too: They're adding a 10th issue starting in 2016, so she'll be assigning soon and will need more ideas than ever.

I've also been working social media to capitalize on a couple of major things that should run this week – several interviewees have huge followings and they'll tweet and retweet the heck out of everything.

LOL! Paula, I'm sorry you had issues. I've not idea what happened. Glad you're able to get in.

Sounds like a great month for you, too! Wow! Good news for 2016, eh?
