Work is Happening

Posted on June 30, 2008 by lwidmer

It’s happened – work has begun piling in right about the time I was thinking it would be nice to go fishing in Ontario. Yes, I just returned from a nice few days off. So what? I work my tail off the rest of the year and frankly, given my seniority at this job, I think I deserve four weeks of vacation time and a few personal days, right? Sick days are another matter. I’d work through nearly any illness if I can sit upright.

Two calls on the cell phone while I was gone – both work-related. Both new projects, so that assuaged my guilt a bit. Why do we writers feel the need to justify our time off with ourselves and others? We work hard. We make money. We survive and yes, even thrive once in a while. We can do what we like. Isn’t that why we took this job in the first place?

Anyway, I’ll be busy this week meeting two immediate deadlines, but I’ll try to post something useful. Start with this. What’s wrong with this sentence?

“Listening would help to diffuse the argument by allowing the other person to feel heard.” Well, besides it being a crappy sentence, what’s technically wrong with it?

Back later…..

Hot flashes you say? Ha, I’ve been through Menopause twice, one surgically when I was 27 and the other was the natural one and as per my doc, I’m finally post-menopausal. I can tell you I definitely feel better, sex has finally returned to normal (although my sexual appetite is like when I was 21ish (yep it comes back in spades).

Oh yeah, we were talking about beds……….I knew I went off track here – sorry ’bout that.

Yes the pillowtop is warmer but it’s also more comforting than the ultra firm one we’ve had for so many years. I learned (and now “need”) my bedroom COLD year round…..say 60ish, yeahhhhh

Thanks Lori for coming by my blog and know that I will come back to yours and spend more time reading. I like your posts, not too long and filled with helpful information, my kinda gal.

I tried an experiment this last weekend. That is, I took the whole thing off. And I didn’t go anywhere. I window-shopped, ambled around, bought myself flowers, read out on the balcony…

Oh ya, the experiment: a) to see if I could bring myself to take two whole days off, b) to see if I could actually do it without falling behind in work, and c) to find out if I actually return to the “office” Monday morning feeling refreshed and eager to start. The answer to all three: Yes.

Taking time off is essential in the long run, and I highly suggest doing it whenever possible.

The sentence to me sounds like a fragment and when I read it I automatically want to read it “Listening will allow the other person to be heard…” before the rest of it. After that, you lost me!

As for those days off. Had that yesterday, accidentally of course. I just knew it wasn’t going to be a productive day so now I am paying for it today.
