What’s on the iPod: I Feel Lucky by Mary Chapin Carpenter
What I’m browsing through: Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott
It’s been a week of detoxing from all the May-related crud, so bear with me as I separate from work for a few posts.
My reasons why books are better than Kindles:
– One more hour staring at a computer screen? Yea, no.
– When you drop a book, you don’t have a small heart attack and mentally dial a computer repair expert – you just pick it up.
– What would I do with all these neat little bookmarks?
– Can I buy used Kindle books? Yes? No?
– The library shelves I’ve been dreaming of would look really weird with just one little Kindle on it.
– The pages just don’t smell the same.
I’ve been making a conscious effort lately to arrange my weeks to have Fridays free. Mind you, when I’m swamped all bets are off, but for now I’m enjoying the longer weekends and feeling a bit more ready for Mondays. July, however, is looking very busy. Amen.
I’ll admit that the last few months I’ve been feeling a bit adrift workwise. The work’s been there, but my interest in it hasn’t. That’s the best sign that I needed to get away from it, even if it’s just stealing a day or two once a week.
Just picked up two projects that I hope will be as much fun to get into as they sound. They’re lucrative – $2K per 1,000-word piece. Again, it takes no math genius to understand how this is better than Demand rates, but I digress into unhappy areas….
Watched an Eddie Izzard DVD last weekend that is destined to be as quotable as all his others – Live from Wembley. It starts a little slow, but he quickly gets into his groove and it’s filled with gems. Is there a transvestite alive funnier than he is? I don’t think so.
What are you pondering these days?

Iliked your reasons why books are better than kindles, and posted that bit on my Read South Africa Facebook group to encourage members to talk about reading.
I hope you find the piece appropriately attributed to you, and I've also included a link to this post.
Have a great weekend.
Found it, Damaria! Thank you. 🙂
I'm with you on the Kindle, Lori. My M.O. every evening is to read in bed before going to sleep. Somehow, I just can't imagine snuggling up to a Kindle. 🙂
Typically, when you have a short week, it's great. This one has been strange & challenging. It's raining again this morning so maybe it will wash away the strange!
Have a great weekend and may next week be smooth sailing (well, I hope it doesn't rain THAT much!)
🙂
Congrats on the big assignments! I've only snagged $2/word one time, so far, anyway. Nice to know some places are still paying well.
As for Kindles – I still don't have an iPod, so it's no surprise that I've never actually seen a Kindle.(Hey, the first time I ever touched an iPod was last summer when I saw one at a store.) After a friend said she'd irreparably broken her Kindle and had to spend another couple hundred dollars on a new one, my thought was, "And they save you money…how?" Sure the downloadable books cost less, but how many do you need to buy before the savings of having the Kindle is more than the cost of the real books? You know, those spined things kind that live in the library.
Eddie Izzard! Did you watch him in The Riches? Worst part of the series: he had to do an American accent. His real accent is so much better….
I don't have a Kindle, but I do like to read some ebooks. I prefer to do it off the computer though. Kindles are too expensive.
But, apparently, I can afford one now since I saw in my spam folder that I received 5 notices, overnight, that I won some international lotteries. Big Bucks, too.
"Thank you for flying Church of England, cake or death?"
For me, there is just something too clinical about reading on a computer screen which includes Kindle. Books have always been my primary source for reading. I like the feel of the book in my hand, the smell of the pages and the thought that so much creativity was used in producing the book. Nowadays, we all use the internet for communication so Kindle is the "thing" to do. However, give me a book any day over a digital contraption.
I have both and like them both. I have the ipad and I like the reader on it. I use the reader at night when I'm lying in bed because it's backlit. I think i will be great for vacations and on the plane.
But books. Oh yes….the feel of them and the smell of them. Nothing tops a book sitting on the beach with sand in your toes. Just nothing else will do.
So I'm a hybrid reader? 🙂
How many miles per gallon do you get? LOL
Amie, cake please. 🙂
I'm on the Fridays-off schedule myself, and it's lovely. It leaves me better recharged for the next work week, and just as I'm starting to feel worn out by Thursday, the week's over. I'm actually making more money now than I was working 5 days per week because I pruned some of the lower-end contracts and pitched increases to the other clients. I hope it turns into a regular thing for you and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
