What’s on the iPod: After the Gold by Neil Young
If you get a chance, head over the About Freelance Writing, where I have a new post.
Yesterday I’d had enough of these four walls, which are now steaming thanks to a Southern exposure and 80 degrees. I grabbed the laptop and headed to the mall. Free WiFi aplenty – usually. I decided on Starbucks because I knew they had outlets. Can someone explain why places offer free WiFi and then give you one outlet to share among 12 people?
Once I got online to stay (15 minutes? Really?) I was able to get some editing done and finish reading my son’s first book manuscript. But forget coming up with anything creative. See, there was this dude – I’m assuming the general manager of the area as he was definitely not the manager and not from that store – and that dude was disruptive. There he was in Starbucks, haven of uber-caffeine treats, and he was practically screaming every sentence and he was REALLY EXCITED about the NEW STORE LOCATION. It was hysterical. I was so tempted to walk up to him and say “Dude. Decaf. For gawd’s sake, DECAF.”
I will say I managed a poem. It was about my response to the over-caffeinated – hey, make lemonade out of the situation, right?
Today is another Friday off. My play date was postponed last week and I’m hoping she can make it out this week. If not, I’ll find a quieter place to work on novel edits. And this weekend, I’m hoping to enjoy the hell out of every second, including, perhaps, a trip to the Jersey shore for some sand between the toes.
What’s your weekend looking like?

I plan to dive intensely into ANGEL HUNT revisions, and go to a Summer Solstice celebration/labyrinth walk on Monday night.
Oooo! That sounds fun!
Our anniversary is Monday so we're heading out to the beach this weekend! (well, most likely, if our kitty can come home from the vet today) Either way, we're celebrating!
I'm planning to avoid going outdoors on Saturday, when it's supposed to be really humid, and in the 90s. That is assuming we make it through today's storms. Last night "Storm Master G" (aka The Weather Channel's Dr. Greg Forbes)listed my neck-o-the-woods at TorCon5, meaning 50-percent chance of tornadic activity within a 50-mile radius.
If it cools down into the 80s on Sunday, I might pull some weeds and try to prep an unsightly space – roughly 3' x 10', maybe 3' x 12' between one corner of the house and the driveway – to receive some hostas. I have a few to divide, and my cousins are going to their lake house this weekend, home of their amazing hosta garden (well over 80 varieties, last time I asked) and promised to bring me some divisions.
Thrilling weekend, I know.
I am going to start planning where to put all my kitchen stuff now that cabinets are hung. I can't reload the bottom ones til the countertop is in next week, and we won't have water in the kitchen until the 28th, but I'm going to have fun playing house nonetheless. And I will also spend much time preparing makeshift meals in another part of the house. I suppose I should mow the lawn and do some weeding, but I'm hoping to delegate those jobs to kids instead.
Ashley, I posted this earlier, but Blogger must hate me or be extremely text hungry – happy anniversary! 🙂
Paula, we're to be humid with a chance of evening thunderstorms – could be severe. Only you would appreciate the TorCon5. 🙂
How's the kitchen look, Eileen?
Spending time on MY stuff by overhauling my site. I've needed to transition from iWeb due to its horrible SEO (as in, none), but have been a bit lazy about it. I found a theme that works, so it's high time I updated my samples. And maybe I'll work on some new samples while I'm at it.
Hopefully I'll be able to flip the switch soon!
sounds like fridays off is the greatest. I had this friday kinda off m'self. Emergency kept me from work.
You ask: "Can someone explain why places offer free WiFi and then give you one outlet to share among 12 people?"
Sure. It's called: giving something with one hand and taking it back with the other. That way they can offer the service, to attract people, but not encourage people to camp out for the day. I've actually seen cafes where there were ample outlets, but they'd all apparently had the current disconnected from them. Annoying.
