My Me Day

For Kathy:

What I’m reading: The Skull Beneath the Skin by PD James (downstairs) and Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier (upstairs)
What’s on the iPod: She’s Mine by Brett Dennen

How strange is it that I’m calling today my “me” day, the day I do just for myself? This coming off a week of recuperating and doing pretty much nothing useful. But I need a space around me right now. So this morning I’m meeting my friend for tea and then I’m coming back to a good book and limited Internet.

The good news – test results showed nothing more heinous than an enlarged thyroid. No stitches, just these annoying tapes to hold me together lest I decide to imitate a human Pez dispenser. The scar is minimal given the stitches (there were only 13, not the 15 I thought – don’t count under the influence of sedatives), but the bruise is huge. Pain – zero. Fatigue – still plenty. I can live with that.

One dinner date canceled because our intended guests had to fly back home, but we did manage to meet with another acquaintance who’s in town on new business. And it’s neat business – the service is called MyBestFit. The idea – you get into the booth, the scanner goes around you measuring, and a minute later, you have a printout of jeans that will fit your body best. If you’ve ever gone through the degrading hell and torture of finding a pair of jeans that fit and are flattering, you have to try this. I found out that one of my options included jeans found at JCPenney. I walked right over to the store and tried. Sure enough, I looked great in a pair of jeans I’d never have considered otherwise.

But we had a nice time getting to know this gal and hearing not just her business story, but her life story. She was someone my husband got to know on a Scottish forum, so the commonality is there to begin with.

I’m excited for a weekend of books and excuses to be lazy. I’m totally looking forward to it. My body still feels weak and unaccustomed to regular activity. That may continue until I get medication, or I may find that it’s merely a side effect of surgery. Too soon to tell.

So my weekend is finishing The Skull Beneath the Skin and getting a good way through Rebecca. A note – don’t try reading two mysteries at the same time. If it weren’t for the difference in language and period, I’d be totally lost.

So what are you doing this weekend?

Writing and gathering energy to be used for the move.

    Amen to that, Devon. 🙂

Stepping up my training for 3-Day Walk-yikes-only 8 weeks until I walk 60 miles in 3 days.

I used to read PD James all the time and got away from reading them-may have to pick it up. I just finished Sandra Brown's new book, Tough Customer.

Take it easy this weekend, Lori!

Do I really need to answer? LOL.

I have one quick project and a column (my standard weekend work), maybe a bit of transcribing.

After that, it's yard work and knitting. Just got this LOVELY thick roving to work with. Started a scarf last night and knocked out about 14" without even trying. I might also bake cookies for a friend who recommended me for a writing gig which netted me an assignment within 24 hours of the initial contact, and quite possibly more in the offing. Pay isn't great, but she said the work is fairly straightforward and there's plenty of it.

This coming off a week of recuperating and doing pretty much nothing useful.

Not to be argumentative, of course, but for those of us out here in readerland, your recuperation is something that's *extremely* useful (and important, and valuable, and worthy …).

As for me, I'm doing a 5K Saturday morning (yay!), catching up on a bunch of work Saturday afternoon (boo!) & hopefully finding some time to do a whole lotta nuthin' sometime during the rest of the weekend.

This weekend I'm doing what you're doing, Lori. Shutting myself inside with a stack of the most delicious reading material. I can't wait! Have a great weekend. 😉

I love Rebecca! I need to reread that novel. It's been too long.

So glad to hear you don't have any pain. And that you found fabulous jeans 🙂 what an interesting service.

My weekend is packed with some fun and some not so fun stuff. I hope the fun stuff will outweigh the unfun stuff 🙂 Have a good one!

    Keep taking it easy, Lori!

What am I doing this weekend? Just like Hugh, a whole lotta nothin'!

Lunch with friends tomorrow, and mixed in some reading and movie watching. Haven't read that PD James, but maybe I'll pick it up. I like PD James, along with a ton of other authors who write British mysteries and police procedurals.

And since you love all things Scottish, do you read Ian Rankin? I love Inspector Rebus and am sorry he's retired (if we believe that).

    Have a great weekend.

Cathy, I didn't care for this PD James book. She sewed things up too quickly, introduced two characters who could have been avoided entirely or incorporated more fully, and the ending was unfulfilling. Good writing, but a little lacking.

No Paula, we knew what you'd be doing. LOL Glad your work doesn't consume your weekend.

How did the 5K go, Hugh? Congrats on it! I can remember my last 5K – I got a trophy, but only because only three people in my age group signed up. LOL

How delicious was that reading material, Kim? I'm looking for new stuff…

I'm glad to hear that, Ashley. It's slow going because it was a time when writers actually described things and took time with their plots, but I think I'm liking it more and more.

Ooo, thanks for the recommendation, Gabriella! I'll try his books out.
