Snow Days and the Writer

Congratulations to Seattle Seahawks fans! Your team shone like diamonds yesterday, much to the dismay of the Denver Broncos. To Broncos fans, my condolences. Your team is better than one performance, so congratulations to them for making it to the big game.

From 50 degrees to 33 — that’s what happened here overnight. Yesterday, I left the coat behind for a light jacket. Today, I’m shoveling 4 inches of snow (and it’s still coming down hard). My dentist’s office called and rescheduled my appointment, and the schools all closed.

The interesting part is that many companies have yet to close their doors. Time is money for some, and as I helped the kids dig the driveway out so they could head to work, I noticed the traffic on the road at the end of our street was crawling. What’s weird about this storm is I woke up to all this snow and as I watched the local news, I saw that the city was just starting to get snow. Delaware and southernmost New Jersey are all rain today. Weird band of weather.

Since my calendar has been freed for me, I can use my snow day productively. I have an article due next Monday, and I have some marketing to finish up from last week. It’s a good day to settle in with a hot cuppa and get something done.

It’s interesting how inspiring a snowfall can be. I’m a weather junkie anyway, as some of you know, so it may not be surprising to know that I open the blinds in the study whenever the snow starts. I can’t stop staring at it. Snow creates this natural hush over the world, muffles sounds and somehow with it my stress. It makes me want to nest and just stare out the window without a care. When was the last time any of us allowed ourselves to go without a care?

That’s a great place to start writing. My day today is blocked out into sections so I can tackle the work and get to the personal projects. The first few hours are devoted to my manuscript edits and to a poetry project. Then I’ll move on to marketing. Best to give the mind a rest before writing again. Once I get through that, I’ll spend the remaining time on the article.

The kids have returned. Because we don’t get much snow around here or because people just don’t pay attention to anyone else on the roads, there are plenty of abandoned cars and minor accidents. They gave up a mile from the house and decided to take a day off.

The snow continues, and may be here until late this afternoon. Then the skies will inhale tomorrow before exhaling down yet another weather event. It’s a great time to work from home.

Tomorrow I’ll share the Monthly Assessment. For now, I’m going to live in the present.

What kinds of moments inspire your creativity?
Do you take snow days? When do you take time off?
How’s the weather where you are?

It's been a crazy year here for snow already, hasn't it? Last year we had maybe one decent snowfall. This year it's one after another. They're still calling for one on Wednesday, and then another on the weekend.

At least my pup is loving it. This is the first time she's gone out romping through the snow. Too cute. 🙂

Snow storms always make me want to curl up with cats and books. I have to catch up on a lot today, but I hope to get in some quiet time. I ran my one errand this morning, so I could stay in the rest of the day.

In MA, they are pretty good about telling us to stay home and telling the businesses to close when the weather's bad.

We've had lots of snow, too, but never had a January thaw so the piles are really getting big. But give me a 24" snow storm over Polar Vortex temps any day!

The guest dogs arrived yesterday for a two week vacation, so my work days will be interrupted with frequent trips outside with Finn, treat breaks, feeding and "pilling" the guest dogs and – my favorite – extra doggie cuddles (both guest dogs love cuddling, my dog prefers her space).

Jenn, last year YOU had snow. I don't think we had anything measurable. Today, wow. They're calling for up to a foot. We're close.

Devon, usually they're so afraid of snow here the whole area shuts down. It's bizarre that some companies are so profit-driven that they don't think of their employees' safety. The kids are lucky — their bosses said to stay home (they couldn't get in, either).

Paula, at least we had the thaw. We'll need another one by week's end, but guess what? We have two more storms to deal with before Sunday.

The weather in one word? Changing. One day I'm out taking my Walks in sunshine (although we went 2 straight weeks with no sun!) and the next day I'm watching the snow fall.

We went from 40 to twenty-something & predictions of lows in the teens most of this week. I am so anxious for it to be over so I don't have to dress like Nanook of the North to get in a Walk.

BTW-boots do not make good walking shoes-got my 1st blister in years!

Cathy, you're right. Boots are terrible for walking! Try hiking boots with wool socks and sock liners.

Well…this is the best time of year in Phoenix, so I'll count my blessings while we're still in the 60s-70s during the day. (Y'all can razz me in August when I'm frying.) That said, a couple of inches have fallen in the eastern mountains, with more to come–so we'll hit the slopes this weekend.

I don't get any snow days, of course, but I did take off Wednesday to go to the Phoenix Open. My daughter was the standard bearer (holding the scoring sign) for heartthrob Rickie Fowler, so she was in 7th heaven. He seems like a down-to-earth guy–nice to see, when you can tell so many pro athletes would rather be anywhere other than hanging out with fans.

Jake, I've been there in August. That's when you thank God for A/C.

Enjoy the skiing! Ours is the snowman kind of snow, and we topped out at close to 10 inches yesterday. I think we're supposed to see one or two more inches today and a repeat over the weekend.

Glad you had your "golf" day off. Sounds like your daughter chose wisely. 🙂

It's completely crazy, isn't it? We ended up with about 8 up here, and we were supposed to be just far enough north to have most of the storm miss us. Not so much!

Now they're saying another 3-6, or 4-8 depending on the source, tonight on top of what we just had. Then they're saying a quarter inch of ice on top of that. Tomorrow is going to be a nightmare. I'm very concerned about the ice taking down tree limbs and knocking our power out up here. We're at the very end of a power line, so there is a lot of room in a heavily wooded township for trees to wreak havoc. It's what they do best! 🙂

As if that's not enough, they're calling for more on Sunday (my bday, so now I have to reschedule things because I won't be able to get out and family can't make it here at planned). Still not sure on the expected totals for that storm, although now they're saying it will run into Monday. I think by the time it's all over, hubby's going to miss being in the office. LOL

Jenn, is your fireplace wood or gas? I'd plan to use that. Having lived in western PA where the power went out a lot, I just assume we'll need to block off rooms and stay where the only heat source is.

And a very happy birthday a little early. 🙂

I'm in San Diego and like Jake, no snow here, although back in the 40s… oh never mind.

Rain helps me be creative, so does writing right after getting up or after a meditation… stay warm!

  12. Lori Widmer Avatar

Love rain sometimes too, Anne. It can create a lovely boredom from which creativity can grow.

If you don't already have a generator, Jenn, maybe you'll get one for your birthday!

Lots of trees, heavy snow AND ice? You're right to be concerned about the power.

    Happy birthday, Jenn!

In southern Oregon we have a very severe drought. The mountains should be covered with snow, but they have essentially none. Crossing our fingers for the storm predicted for the weekend.

  15. Lori Widmer Avatar

John, I've been seeing that on the news. If I could ship some of this to you, I would. Praying you get the storms you need.
