Happy Thanksgiving

What I’m listening to: Tillidh Mi (I Will Return) by Runrig

erntedank-thanksgiving-1320483-1278x855Remember the reason you became a freelancer? More free time, more freedom of movement, the ability to call the shots, name your hours….

That last one. That’s the one we forget, don’t we? If you’re like me, you’ve spent plenty of holiday vacations–times when other people take a few days or the entire week off–working.

Where’s the freedom in that?

My vacation reply went up yesterday. I still had work, but I wasn’t taking on new work. I was tidying up before switching off the computer and spending time with family.

But before I go, I’d love to share my list of what I’m thankful for.

I’m thankful for health and love. My life has an abundance of both. Family and friends (who are just extended family) are my #1 priority.

I’m thankful to still have both parents. And I’m old enough (wise enough?) to know what a gift that is. I treasure it every single day.

I’m thankful to be a successful freelance writer. I make more than enough money, have great clients, and work on things I love working on.

I’m thankful to have tenacity. Without it, I’d have given up on freelancing the first year. But sometimes there’s this fire inside that won’t be quenched, so it must be harnessed.

I’m thankful for my clients. They make my job easy, and they are more to me than just clients — they’re partners. I appreciate their faith in me.

I’m thankful for you. Every one of you — lurkers and regular commenters — have found my ramblings interesting/entertaining enough to keep coming back. I appreciate you all.

I’ll be back on Monday. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Writers, what are you thankful for? (Lurkers, that means you, too!)

Hi Lori, happy Thanksgiving. I’m thankful that my husband is driving now as we make our way to Rhode Island. I’m thankful every day it’s sunny, and I enjoyed the warm November. I’m grateful for the large new project that landed in my lap on Monday–writing a 4-H curriculum. I’m grateful for the guidance, inspiration, and friendship of fellow writers like you, Lori.

I hope your Thanksgiving was as nice as mine. Four days at our cousins’ cabin deep in the North Woods….twelve people (okay one was only there less than 24 hrs), five dogs, crafting, no TV, spotty wi-fi and way too much good food. Several inches of fresh snow, crafts, family games, riotous laughter, and Black Friday shopping at thrift stores.

This year we had a couple things to be especially thankful for: one family member recovering from a nasty bout of meningitis (are there any other kinds?) and my sister’s recovery from a broken knee and knee surgery.
I’m also very thankful for the incredibly supportive community of writers you’ve cultivated here, Lori.

It was lovely, Paula — my mother prohibited politics anywhere in the house that weekend. It was glorious!

Sounds like yours was a wonderful celebration, too. And I’m thankful for you, Anne, and Joy. 🙂
