I worked with Arthur Miller years ago, off-Broadway. He hung out in the wardrobe room. He found a short story I’d scribbled on butcher paper in between cues. He encouraged me to work on it and submit it (it was published and paid). He then told me I should stop working backstage and write full time. Because I would never hit the quality of work I needed to as a professional if the stakes weren’t high enough for making a living. I’d never reach my potential if I relied on a day job — or, in the case of theatre, a night job. I liked to eat, and stayed in production for another 15 or so years. But his words never left me. David Mamet told me something similar, that his job was to write well enough for the theatre to put butts in seats so he could eat. He kept working until he did.
