I'd tweet that, too. Great advice.

Thank you again, Sharon. Great stuff here!

What a lucky daughter to have a role model like you—plus your husband and your mother!

I was a freshman in high school when my dad was forced to go freelance. I wish he'd started earlier. (He would have been happier and would have earned more, too.) The lesson that taught me is never to rely on someone else's for-profit company for your financial security since they can fire you at any time. My sister's a freelancer, too.

I love that your daughter views freelancing as the norm. She's already poised for success with you as her mom, Sharon. But she'll be a success on her own terms.

It's amazing what our kids learn from us, Joy, usually much more than we ever think we're teaching. There's nothing like looking at your life through the eyes of our kids to teach us that. :)

Thanks, Cathy. Everything happens in its own time, right?

You've just given me an idea for another post, too. ;)

I love that--raise great freelancers. What a gift of flexibility and self-determination you're giving to your daughter, Sharon. Hey, wait, I guess I'm giving that to my kids too. I never really thought of it this way. Thank you!

Tweet this ~ why box yourself into the straitjacket of other people’s expectations? ~ love it, Sharon! You know I think you hit on a great formula for a confident freelancer - raise them. :-) This post is chock-full of great advice. But, then that is not surprising. It's Sharon. ;-)

I always say I wished I seized the moment 10 years earlier than I did. My large company had been acquired and I received severance when I decided to opt for that instead of staying. Imagine the possibilities.

But, I think there's an equally important way to view that decision. If I had started my freelancing career then, I'd never had acquired the great consulting skills I gained after leaving that employer. I worked for an international consulting company that taught me so many lessons I use in my own business.

Everything happens for a reason. Thanks, Sharon, for a great post. Can't wait to see your daughter's success.
