There’s the difference, for sure. I had a similar situation with a guy who would answer emails at midnight. Naturally when I wouldn’t jump at his directive to call him during my vacation, he and I parted company. Never regretted that one bit.

It’s astounding the number of publicists who work around the clock and expect me to as well. The big difference: they’re collecting a hefty salary while I’m paid by project so there’s no incentive for me to match their hours.

I think simply not answering emails when you’re not working isn’t passive-aggressive (assuming this is your method). To me, it’s limiting my computer time and my stress time. But I do agree that clients need a message. I usually give them a direct reminder: “I’m sorry I missed your email, but I don’t work weekends and am rarely near the computer.”

If that doesn’t work, I’m right there with you — just ignore them.

Not being much of a vacationer, I have to say I am getting better at not replying to most work calls and emails outside of business hours, unless it’s an urgent case. (I think I’m actually enforcing a passive-aggressive way to remind certain people that deadlines are deadlines and I’m not being paid to give up my limited personal time.

But what I really want to address is your dream house. I love seeing beautiful parts of the world and knowing some people actually just think of it as home.
