Jenn, for me, bylines are irrelevant. If I want one, I'll just write an article. I'm paid to do a job based on their ideas, not mine. In that case, I'm helping them get their message out. I've never understood the aversion some writers have to ghostwriting--I'm not selling them my ideas (or my soul). I'm selling them my services.

Great post Jenn,

I recently quit my daytime job, and looking to get into freelance writing… specifically ghostblogging.

All the sources I have checked say not to rely on advertised jobs but to get out there and dig around to find the jobs.

I particularly liked some advise to target websites that are advertising using Google Adwords but do not appear to have an active blog.

I am sure that once I am done with the learning, I will be all ready to get out and get those jobs!

Great idea Cathy! Not only do you see more stable income that way, but the long-term contracts can certainly soften the blow of a rate increase. :)

And Lori, I'm with you. I write more for small businesses than corporate clients, but the pay is still so much more important than a byline. Not only can ghostwriting gigs pay well, but they can also cut out a lot of stress by minimizing follow-up. For example, I'm almost never asked to manage comments on ghostwritten posts. But I can still charge more for them. It's difficult not to be happy with that arrangement. :)
