Jenn, for me, bylines are irrelevant. If I want one, I'll just write an article. I'm paid to do a job based on their ideas, not mine. In that case, I'm helping them get their message out. I've never understood the aversion some writers have to ghostwriting–I'm not selling them my ideas (or my soul). I'm selling them my services.

It's been about three years since I was a contracted blogger for a yarn company – so this is a good reminder that I need to work on landing an ongoing blogging gig, and expand that side of my business from there.

Great post Jenn,

I recently quit my daytime job, and looking to get into freelance writing... specifically ghostblogging.

All the sources I have checked say not to rely on advertised jobs but to get out there and dig around to find the jobs.

I particularly liked some advise to target websites that are advertising using Google Adwords but do not appear to have an active blog.

I am sure that once I am done with the learning, I will be all ready to get out and get those jobs!

Great idea Cathy! Not only do you see more stable income that way, but the long-term contracts can certainly soften the blow of a rate increase. :)

And Lori, I'm with you. I write more for small businesses than corporate clients, but the pay is still so much more important than a byline. Not only can ghostwriting gigs pay well, but they can also cut out a lot of stress by minimizing follow-up. For example, I'm almost never asked to manage comments on ghostwritten posts. But I can still charge more for them. It's difficult not to be happy with that arrangement. :)
