Kristen, I love having you here. :) Thanks for your comment. Totally agree -- the best way to improve your business is by seeking out those with whom you'd like to work.

Paula, amen, amen, AMEN. I can count at least two current clients that I started contacting a year or better before they hired me.

Jake, that's a brilliant strategy, too. You've already found people who understand your value, and you can act as their source of referrals, too. Great match!

Gabriella, HuffPo has a lot of backing by too many media outlets to fold right away. But I do think their days are numbered if they believe writers will work for free on a constant basis.

Cathy, terrific advice. One thing works just as well as trying to keep up with several things. I agree -- with the right amount of effort, it will work.

Never did the Demand thing, though I did have a stint at Guru.com (can't remember what it was before that). I was dumb enough to pay for the three-month "premium" job listings. What a joke. The same garbage that was at the lower level was right there at the higher level. I canceled, complained, and moved to a different way of finding work.
What worked well for me was focusing my efforts on LinkedIn in the beginning of my freelancing career. I still receive projects from both my profile and through my connections (referrals, their own requests).

I think if you pick something that works for you and put some effort into your networking, you'll reap the rewards.

P.S. I applied at Demand Studio when I 1st started. When I saw what they had to offer, I walked (okay, more like ran) the other way.

Hi Lori.

I don't have any deep thoughts on this topic (I feel much the same way you do). But I must say the news in this post made my day. And I totally agree, a girl can dream that HuffPo is right behind.

I've always been a big proponent of LOIs because they're more proactive than replying to job ads. But the key is to follow up - sometimes more than once.

I landed an assignment due this week solely because I followed up on a follow up to a follow up of a LOI.

Whichever methods work for you, persistence is always important.
