You should be charging a minimum. I have a minimum for press releases, and usually a minimum for small jobs (depends on the client — new clients pay it, existing clients typically don't get charged it).

At the first of the year I think I'll implement a minimum charge to help weed out the smaller assignments that eat up so much time. That had to hurt like hell. Unexpected is the worst — some you can sense are coming to an end, but those "guess what" ones just devastate the income.

Agreed on the one-and-done projects. I like helping people out, but often it's a lot of negotiation and then work for little payoff. Still, I've had some really great referrals from one-offs. Tough call on that one sometimes.

Damaria, you of all people are certainly worth more! I love that line from the song because it's true in so many aspects of our lives, isn't it?

This is so true Lori. It took me a while to realise that the reason I was earning very little was not because clients were willing to pay. It was because I was too scared to ask for more. I didn't believe that what I offered was worth the money. Some other talented writer could and get it, but me, I was too new/too inexperienced/too something to be that class of writer. So in a sense, I was my own jailor. And I'm glad I listened to writers like you, who told me I was worth more, and showed me how I could get higher pay.

All were unexpected. All painful.

I made a conscious decision to stop what I call the "one & done." The little piddly projects that are not a lot of income and rarely produce anything else from the client.

I have weaned myself away from low-paying clients and have been getting more and more referrals.

I may get the hang of this eventually – hopefully before I retire. 😉

The hard part is landing the right clients. Diversification is also important like you said. Freelancers don't want to just have one or two clients because it's possible one could go away — nothing to do with your work.
