Cathy, this is brilliant. I think writers get stuck in this idea that we have to leap in with two feet and run like hell fresh out of the gate. This isn't a horse race -- it's a career. Inertia is the death of any career, so if you don't want the marathon and you don't want the lack of movement, what can you do?

Baby steps. :) May take a few dozen, but as you say, it's movement forward.

Outstanding post, Cathy.

One of the things I discovered when I need to deliver "walking papers" is, much as I'd like to overlap, the only way it ever works is to make a clean break so there's room for the new.

Terrifying sometimes, but otherwise, I wind up just hanging on to what doesn't work and getting more and more mired.
