Jenn, there's the entire issue. These are people who either A) don't hire writers and don't know how or, B) don't intend to hire anyone and will steal the work anyway.

That was an odd shift in the advertised pay rate. An 80% reduction??? And I'll never understand the custom sample crowd. If you can't tell if a professional writer is or isn't a good fit for your project from their portfolio, you're not in a position to hire a pro to begin with.

No. No. No. He wants people quoting more than $12/hour to pre-edit a paragraph to justify their rate? Right. What do you bet he cobbles together those unpaid "samples" instead of paying anyone to write his bio?

The second one – that'd be a maybe. Like Devon, I'd have to review some issues first. If I had a story idea that fit well there (and that I hadn't been able to sell to a better-paying market) I might give it a try. I'd definitely target better payers first.

The first is just an obvious nightmare. Reminds me of my ex-client.

The second — I'd have to actually study a few issues of the magazine, but my gut is that, since I don't particularly care for most "upper level management", I'm not the person to write material aimed at them.
