You slam down the phone on 3 Senior VPs (including your boss) who are insisting you join them in the conference room for a meeting at 5 PM when you have to get benefit booklets for 7,000 employees to the printer.

That's a pretty big clue you should be freelancing.

PS Thankfully, my boss, er that person's boss was very understanding and supportive upon receiving that person's resignation.
