Being able to understand and appreciate the value of a freelance writer is a big factor for me. I'm lucky in that most of mine are great about it.

There was a perfect example this morning. A regular came to me wanting a new project, a bit different than our usual blogging gig. He, on his own, offered to pay double our normal rate because he understood the project would take some more time and effort. I can't put into words how refreshing that feels, just knowing I don't have to fight with my clients over things like that. They have reasonable expectations, and they're willing to pay for what they want. :)

I agree with all of the above... and I'll add that the best clients appreciate quality work--if they're just looking for cheap and/or fast, I'm not the editor for them.

I'm lucky to work with clients who almost always understand how long work will take and who adjust budgets as necessary so I'm paid fairly.
