The mill supporters boast that these article pieces they're writing are great samples or clips for future private client work.

Maybe in some cases, but anyone looking to break into freelance writing should know that it won't happen in all cases.

Not so. We're simply against working for peanuts. To confuse the issue by making false generalizations is confusing new writers.
