In fact, the principles you outline here really apply to any small business endeavor, from freelance writing to construction.

I get a lot of work-at-home moms (and women who want to be work-at-home moms) at my web site who ask me how I’ve gotten to the place I’m at now, where I have a fairly steady and reliable income from writing. I try to tell them the things you tell them here: It’s just plain hard work.

So many writers, work-at-home moms, and construction contractors don’t get these ideas. Sacrifice, having a tough skin, dealing with all sorts of people are all a part of it.

I get so sick of people assuming that I must have a really easy life as a freelancer (the words “pyjamas” and “TV” seem to be thrown around a lot by these people), when it’s anything but.

For me, the most amazing thing was working out how little I could actually live on. Before I became a freelancer, I was a spendthrift, but these days I’m constantly amazed by how much money I actually “need”. (How much I want is a different matter altogether, of course!)

I really enjoyed this post. Too many people think “wow, it’d be nice to sit at home all day in my PJs and write for Cosmo,” but the reality isn’t quite as rosy. Rejections get easier as you build confidence and see how many options there are for publishing your work.
